How Nasal Sprays Can Help Your Child Breathe Better, Sleep Better, and Possibly

Avoid Surgery

Your child's nose does much more than help them breathe!  It's closely connected to their ears, adenoids, sinuses, and throat. When the nose becomes swollen or congested, it can affect all of these areas, including how well your child sleeps.

The good news?  When used properly, many children improve with nasal sprays and may be able to avoid or delay ENT surgery.

Six Ways Nasal Sprays Can Help

  1. Healthier Ears, Less Fluid: Reducing swelling near the Eustachian tubes may help the ears ventilate and clear fluid naturally, although sprays don't always resolve fluid already behind the eardrum.

  2. Smaller, Less Swollen Adenoids: Certain nasal sprays can reduce inflammation and sometimes shrink enlarged adenoids, making it easier to breathe through the nose.

  3. Less Postnasal Drip and Throat Irritation: Reducing excess mucus dripping down the throat can help relieve coughing, throat clearing, and irritation around the tonsils.

  4. Clearer, Healthier Sinuses: Less swelling allows mucus to drain more easily, helping reduce congestion and sinus problems.

  5. Better, Naturally Filtered Air: A clearer nose helps your child breathe air that is properly filtered, warmed, and humidified before it reaches the lungs.

  6. Quieter, More Restful Sleep: Easier nasal breathing may reduce mouth breathing, snoring, and restless sleep. Children with sleep apnea may still need additional treatment.

Our Goal: Better Breathing Without Surgery Whenever Possible

Not every child needs surgery! For many kids, nasal sprays are a simple, effective way to improve breathing and relieve related symptoms.

Regular follow-up visits with Dr. Respler are important. We'll check your child's nose, ears, adenoids, and sleep symptoms to see how well the sprays are working. If your child is improving, we may be able to gradually reduce how often the sprays are needed or stop them altogether.  Every child is different. Some respond beautifully to nasal treatment, while others may still need surgery to address persistent problems.

The Bottom Line

Our goal is simple: help your child breathe easier, keep their ears and sinuses healthier, reduce throat irritation, and enjoy a better night's sleep, all while avoiding unnecessary surgery whenever possible.

With regular checkups and guidance from Dr. Respler, we'll find the safest, simplest, and most effective treatment for your child.
